“It was like living with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” Lake says. “I wanted to save him, but I couldn’t.”
The couple split in 2015, though “I was still supporting him,” Lake says, “financially and emotionally.”
When she learned of his death, Lake crumbled.

“I got to experience true depression,” she says. “There were days when I couldn’t get out of bed, and that is a very scary place to be. I’m such a positive person, and to not feel like that was paralyzing.”
With help from therapy and close friends and family, as well as her work with Bring Change to Mind — an organization that aims to alter the stigmas of mental illness — Lake gradually learned how to move forward.
